July in WordPress

Another month has turned and it saw a great time to focus on contributing to WordPress. I was lucky enough to get time to focus thanks to sponsors, here is what I did.

Areas of contribution

My split this month was clearly between triage, program work and feedback. In core editor there was a lot of feedback for design, for AI there was some foundation setting and organising.

  • I focused on a few key areas this month:
    • ‘Needs design’: ensuring in core editor the queue is truly that.
    • Triage focused on ancient and inactive trac log and core-editor no comments.
    • Program work: sorting out milestones, labels and setup for core AI. This also included starting the handbook.
  • Tickets covered: 89 (a large amount this time were feedback focused)

One reflection I had was giving myself time this month to give the feedback, have the planning and discovery conversations as 6.9 formed. This was a little different from the push to ship of past months, but it forms the base for focused work the next few months.

Sharing the journey

Last month I spent quite some time writing as I explored, so I wanted to also share those.

Upcoming plans for contribution

August is going to close out by my attendance at WordCamp US, where I am giving a talk on ‘The system is the Strategy’. I also plan to attend the contribution day. Apart from that my focus will be:

  • Triage: focus on ancient and inactive trac log.
  • Core AI: fill out the handbook and have ready for WCUS contributor day. Continue to document processes and decisions as they are made, including roadmaps.
  • Move on to the triage of the components label if time.
  • Look to update design handbook ready for WordCamp US so it can also be self serve for current projects.

Sponsors this month

I now have these sponsors: BigScoots, Greyd, Kinsta, ServMask, Aaron Jorbin, Tim Nash, Jeffrey Paul and Scot Rumery. To everyone who sponsored me and helped me secure sponsorship, thank you.

Want to sponsor me? You can through GitHub.

There is always sponsorship, of course, that is volunteered, and I’ll do as much as possible whilst still keeping things flowing – let’s get contributing!
